Filing an Employment Lawsuit in the State of Washington

KIRO 7 News published a story about a recently filed lawsuit against the state of Washington. According to the article, an employee with the Washington State Ferries has filed a suit claiming he was retaliated against after speaking out. Alex Zecha, the prior Ferries employee, was a career engineer working for the state of Washington. Mr. Zecha informed KIRO 7 that he believed he had been passed up for promotion multiple times for speaking out about wrongdoings. Zecha goes on to state that the issues started when he noticed special software wasn’t installed, and therefore, he felt tax dollars were being improperly spent. The case was filled as a Civil Rights Employment Discrimination suit.

We are also going to touch on a few key elements we believe are vital when considering the utilization of a Seattle employment law attorney.

What Are My Legal Options If I Have Been Wronged at Work

First and foremost, we need to take a minute to talk about what our website provides, and what it does not provide. We believe this is very important because if you’re taking the time to read one of our articles, chances are, you’re in a pickle at work. First, our website does not provide legal advice. The opinions expressed within our articles are just that, our opinions. Now, our law firm has over 90 plus years of combined legal experience. Mr. George Tamblyn holds a perfect 10 Avvo rating as an employment law attorney in the state of Washington. Attorney Kuderer has over 27 years of legal experience and is also rated by Avvo. So, we believe our opinions are valuable, and that the topics we discuss may be able to provide you with information to help you along your quest for workplace justice. However, we are not providing legal advice on our site. If you do wish to obtain legal advice, or to talk with a King County employment law attorney, call (206) 236-2769 now.

So, not that we have that out of the way, let’s discuss what legal recourse you may or may not have. If you’re sitting around asking yourself “what are my legal options if I have been wronged at work” than you are off to the right start. See, employees are protected by certain rights in the state of Washington. In fact, the government enforces businesses to uphold and honor those rights. If businesses do not they may face legal consequences. Unfortunately, not all laws are easy to understand. Even when it may appear or feel like your employes is 100% in the wrong, it may not be as clear in the eyes of the law. Understanding our legal system, and navigating the muddy waters of employment law, can be difficult. If you’ve been wronged at work, you may want to consider retaining the services of an employment law attorney.

At the end of the day, you have the right to be paid the money you are owed. You have the right to be treated fairly, and to not be victimized through discrimination or sexual harassment. As we look at the Zecha case, you also have the right to not face reprimanding for speaking out about a wrongdoing at work.

Wage and Hour Dispute Rights

When most people accept employment they do so with good intentions. Whether you’re stepping into a career role, or if you just working a job while you figure out your path, if you work hard and do right by your employer you deserve to be paid. If you believe your employer has short-changed you, or if you haven’t been paid properly, you may have a case on your hands. Our King County wage and hour dispute attorneys can help you fight for the financial justice you deserve. Click here to learn more about our wage and hour dispute lawyers.

Age and Gender Discrimination Rights

The state of Washington enforces equal opportunity employment rights. That means an employer cannot discriminate against an employee due to race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or age. If you believe you have been terminated, treated unfairly, abused, or harassed you may be the victim of workplace discrimination. Our King County employment discrimination attorneys know how to fight to defend your reputation and protect your financial interests.

Wrongful Termination and Whistleblower Rights

Two of the areas that we dedicate a significant amount of time to are wrongful termination cases and whistleblower lawsuits. If you believe you have wrongfully terminated, or fired for no good reason, give us a call. In addition, if you have spoken up about an issue at work and you are now feeling the pressure from the powers that be to stay quiet, we can help. Protecting the rights of employees is something we’ve excelled at for decades. We understand how employment law works in the state of Washington and we fight to get our clients the monetary compensation they deserve.

Whistleblower Laws in the State of Washington

Looking at the case brought forth by Zecha, he is claiming his workplace rights were violated due to speaking out. The KIRO 7 article states that Mr. Zecha feels he was discriminated against and passed up because he brought to light wrongdoing by the Washington State Ferris. This tends to fall in line with whistleblower violations. Employees have very specific rights protected by the state and federal government that are designed to give employees a safe way to speak up about wrongdoings at work. In fact, in 2012 Congress passed the WPEA to further protect whistleblower rights.

Why are whistleblower rights so important? Simple, businesses may sometimes sweep issues under the rug to avoid lawsuits, legal issues, or criminal complaints. Too often companies put profits ahead of doing the right thing. This means employees, or those working within the close nit company circles, may have first-hand info about a wrongdoing. Being able to bring that issue to light, to help the public and protect the safety and perhaps the rights of other employees, is paramount.
